Northern Primorska stretches from the high mountains of the Julian Alps along the Soča valley to Goriška brda and the Vipava valley. The Soča links the Alpine part of the region with the plain by Nova Gorica, while the western and southern hinterland is marked by vineyards and the influence of the Mediterranean climate.
Bovec lies below Kanin and is associated with water sports on the Soča. The Isonzo Front is the central theme of the Kobarid Museum in Kobarid, and near the village is the Kozjak waterfall. Tolmin are marked by the Tolmin gorges, Cerkno ski resort and Franja Partisan Hospital, Idrija preserves the heritage of the mercury mine, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the tradition of Idrija lace.
