Bovec

Bovec: the emerald Soča, Kanin above the valley and water adventures

Bovec lies in a basin on the upper course of the Soča, surrounded by the walls of Kanin, Rombon and Mangart. The place is small but its hinterland is not, as within half an hour's drive you reach the source of the river, the most powerful waterfall in the country and the highest road pass in Slovenia.

In summer Bovec is a centre for water sports, and in winter the starting point for the only Slovenian ski area with terrain above two thousand metres, which gives it two entirely separate seasons. It is precisely this duality that gives the place two peaks of visitors, while in between, in spring and late autumn, the valley is at its quietest.

The Soča and its gorges

The Soča is the reason most visitors come to this valley at all. The colour of the river is the result of limestone particles in the water, and it is most intense where the bed narrows into gorges. If you are after that famous emerald colour, stop right by the gorges.

The Great Gorge a few kilometres above Bovec is the best-known stretch of the river, where the bed cuts into the rock to a depth of ten metres. Alongside it runs The Soča Trail, which links several points along the river, so you can decide the length of the walk yourself.

the Boka Waterfall and Kanin

The Boka Waterfall, with a total height of one hundred and forty-four metres and a width of eighteen metres, is Slovenia's most water-rich waterfall. It is at its finest in spring during the snowmelt, when you can see it already from the road between Bovec and Žaga, while for a close-up view reckon on half an hour's walk uphill.

Above the valley rises Kanin with the high karst plateau, full of dolines and abysses, which feels like an entirely different world from the valley below it. the Kanin ski resort is the only Slovenian ski area with terrain above two thousand metres and is connected to Italian Sella Nevea, while in summer the gondola saves hikers most of the climb to the view towards the Adriatic.

Trenta and the source of the Soča

The Trenta Valley begins above Bovec and leads deep into Triglav National Park. It is considerably quieter than the valley below it, so choose it if you are looking for nature without the queues.

At the end of the valley is the source of the Soča, reached by a short but steep path with steel cables, which we recommend only to more skilled hikers. In the valley there is also The Trenta Museum, which explains life in the valley before tourism.

Vršič, Mangart and military heritage

From Trenta the road climbs up to Vršič, which at one thousand six hundred and eleven metres is the highest road pass in Slovenia. The fifty hairpin bends were built during the First World War by Russian prisoners of war, and their memorial is the Russian Chapel on the northern side. You can stop there on the way down too.

The war left so many traces in the valley that you can string them together into a day of their own. The Kluže Fortress above the Koritnica gorge is the most picturesque, The Walk of Peace connects the remains of the Isonzo Front from the mountains to the sea. Above Log pod Mangartom the Mangart road, the highest in the country, also branches off.

What to do in Bovec?

Bovec is above all a place of activities, so most of the programme is tied to the river and the mountains above it. On the Soča you can choose among rafting, kayaking and canyoning, and in the air paragliding from the Bovec airfield and from Kanin.

For a quieter day you can opt for hiking in the valley or for cycling, while in winter winter activities from skiing to ski touring. You can see the offer gathered under experiences in Bovec.

Bovec with children

With children the shorter parts of the Soča Trail, swimming in the pools by the river and the gondola ride up Kanin, where the view comes without effort, all work well. The water is cold even in midsummer, so reckon on short swims and take towels with you.

In the rain there remain the Trenta Museum, the Kluže Fortress and the drive over Vršič.

Bovec for two

For a quiet day choose Trenta instead of the main valley and walk to the source of the Soča, where there are far fewer visitors than at the gorges. In the evening the valley is dark, so above Bovec you can watch the stars without light pollution.

Driving over Vršič at sunset is a classic that is worth it if you avoid the afternoon rush. The road is narrow and winding, so allow more time for it than the map suggests.

What and where to eat in Bovec?

The Bovec cuisine is mountainous and simple, and on the menus follow Bovec krafi, sheep's cheese from the valley, jota and goulash. In inns in the town and the surrounding villages the offer is most concentrated, and the menus differ from one season to the next.

The Bovec sheep's cheese is protected and is made on the mountain pastures above the valley. Try it right at its source, on the farms and pastures above the valley.

Where to stay in Bovec?

The most offerings are among apartments, which are scattered around the town and the surrounding villages. For a stay closer to the mountains there are also huts, and for skiers accommodation by the ski slope.

In both seasons demand is high, so arrange accommodation in advance. Outside the season the choice is smaller.

Where to go on a trip from Bovec?

Downstream along the river is Kobarid with the Museum of the Soča Front and the Kozjak waterfall, which is a good half-hour from Bovec. Upwards lead Trenta and Vršič, and on the other side of the pass Upper Carniola opens up.

For a broader overview of the valley and mountains, look at Julian Alps, where Bled, Bohinj and Kranjska Gora are gathered too. All this is at most an hour and a half from Bovec, although in winter Vršič is closed and the route is longer.
