The Kanin shelves are world-famous examples of high-mountain karst plateaus and one of the most important speleological areas in Slovenia.
Karst phenomena such as shafts, karren, solution pans, dolines, natural bridges and others flourish in such number and variety that they give a distinctive stamp to this high-mountain landscape.
Because of the karst structure the water has cut its ways underground and hollowed out here the deepest Slovenian shafts and caves. The southern slopes of Kanin are fringed by numerous karst springs, among them the picturesque Boka waterfall above Bovec.
