The Logar Valley is a glacial valley in the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, 7 kilometres long and on average only 250 metres wide. Since 1987 it has been protected as a landscape park, which covers the entire valley up to the ridges and measures 24.3 square kilometres. The floor is flat and grassy, and the walls beside it rise so close that the valley looks like an enclosed space. It is precisely this shape that makes a walk on the flat in the middle of high mountains possible here.
We divide the valley into three parts: Log and Plest with their grassy meadows, and Kot, which is covered with forest. The same path leads through all three past solitary farms, and along it follow waterfalls, springs, caves and glacial boulders, as the valley has more than 40 natural features. At the end of the valley is the Rinka Waterfall, which falls in a narrow stream for 90 metres over a glacial threshold. It is the most visited point of the valley and the goal of most who come here, so for peace choose the early morning. Above the waterfall the path continues towards Okrešelj, where the high-mountain world opens up, but this part is already more demanding and no longer a walk. Below the waterfall there is a hut where you can stop before returning.
The valley is a landscape park, so entry is regulated: at the entrance there is a toll booth for vehicles, where you pay the entry fee, and the car parks are spread along the valley, so you can leave your car closer to the waterfall or at the entrance. The current price and the way in are published on strani krajinskega parka. If you want to walk, leave the car at the entrance, because the path through the valley is flat and pleasant.
Logarska ni edina dolina v tem kotu Slovenije, le najbolj znana. Vzhodno od nje je Robanov kot, which is less visited and wilder, and to the west Matkov kot with Matkov škaf. Above all three runs the Solčava Panoramic Road, along which you can drive past high farms and views over the valleys. All three valleys and the road are part of the Solčava area, whose centre is Solčava.
The offer in the valley is tied to farms and huts, so expect home-made food: cheese and meat dishes, žganci, sour milk and potato dishes. The choice is small and depends on the season, so outside summer reckon on fewer places being open. For more choice, drive to Solčavo ali naprej v Luče. At the weekend a reservation makes sense, because the houses are small and family-run.
Logar Valley has no accommodation offer of its own on the portal, so look for lodging in the nearby places. Most of it is in Solčava, which is closest to the valley, and some in Lučah, in Ljubnem ob Savinji and in Mozirju. As the road through the Savinja Valley is narrow, reckon that the drive will be longer than the map suggests. If you are looking for a farm stay, choose this corner of Slovenia, because the farms here are still working.
Summer is the busiest, because the path through the valley is open and the waterfall the easiest to reach, but that is also when there are the most crowds. Autumn brings colours in the forest and quiet, so plan a walk then and not the climb above the waterfall. In winter the valley is snow-covered and quiet, and the paths can be icy, so wear suitable footwear. In spring the waterfall is at its most powerful, because the snow is melting in the mountains, and access to Okrešelj is then still limited.
