The real farm stay, Jelinčič Soča!
The real farm stay, Jelinčič Soča!
The Soča Valley stretches from the source below Vršič to Tolmin, and along it flows the river, which is a distinctive emerald colour because of the limestone particles in the water. It is precisely the colour that is the reason most visitors come at all, even though the valley reveals itself only when you turn off the main road towards the water.
The valley has three main starting points, each with its own character: Bovec is sporty, Kobarid is historical and culinary, Tolmin is the most everyday one and closest to the warm part of Primorska. If you know what you are looking for, the choice of base decides almost by itself.
In several places the Soča narrows into gorges, where the water cuts into the rock and the colour becomes most intense. The Great Gorge above Bovec is the best known, while the Small Gorge above it is far less visited and therefore quieter.
Along the river runs The Soča Trail, which links several points from the source downstream, so you can decide the length of the walk yourself. Swimming is possible in the pools, where you can cool off, but the water is cold even in midsummer, so swims are as a rule short.
Bovec is the starting point for rafting, kayaking, canyoning and paragliding, which are the main reason for a longer stay in the valley. The season is tied to the water level, which is highest in spring and eases off in summer, so you can experience the same descent completely differently in June and in August.
Above the place rises Kanin with its high-mountain plateau and the only Slovenian ski terrain above two thousand metres. In Trenta above it the valley calms and leads deep into the Triglav National Park.
Kobarid is most associated with the First World War, as the Soča Front unfolded here, leaving behind caverns, trenches and cemeteries. The Kobarid Museum is the best introduction to this story, since it puts the events in context before you head out into the field.
From the town leads The Walk of Peace, which connects the remains of the front from the mountains to the sea, and above Bovec stands the Kluže fortress above the Koritnica gorge. For such a small town, Kobarid has an unusually dense dining offer.
Tolmin lies where the valley widens and the climate becomes milder. The Tolmin Gorges are the lowest entry point of Triglav National Park and the only one you reach without a climb, which is why they are also the most visited.
Above the town opens the Tolmin area with its high plateaus, where there are far fewer visitors. In summer the town is marked by the music festivals at the confluence of the Soča and the Tolminka, which draw a different audience from the rest of the valley.
In summer water activities, hiking and cycling along the valley prevail, while in winter it is skiing on Kanin and ski touring. For a quieter day you can choose visits to the gorges, the museum and the military heritage, which are accessible regardless of the water level.
Because the offer varies from place to place, it pays to know in advance whether you are after sport or history, as this decides which place you will stay in. You will find an overview among experiences in the Soča Valley.
For families the most rewarding are the shorter sections of the Soča Trail, the Tolmin Gorges and swimming in the pools, where the water is shallow. None of the three requires experience, but reckon on cold water even in midsummer.
In the rain there remain the Kobarid Museum, the Kluže Fortress and the museum in Trenta.
For a quiet day, choose Trenta or the Small Gorge instead of the Great one, where there are far fewer visitors. For dinner, Kobarid most often works best, as the choice there is the largest in the valley.
If you want to leave the valley, in summer drive over Vršič, one of the most beautiful mountain road passes in the country. The road is narrow and winding, so allow more time for it than the map suggests.
The cuisine combines mountain and coastal influences: Tolmin cheese, frika, čompe with curd, Soča trout and Bovec krafi. Tolminc is a protected cheese, which you can also try at the cheesemakers on the pastures above the valley.
The offer is densest in Kobarid, while in the villages inns with home cooking prevail. You will find an overview among the culinary offer.
The choice of place decides what the visit will be like, so make it first. For sport choose Bovec, for history and food Kobarid, and for a quieter stay and the proximity of the warmer part of Primorska, Tolmin.
There are mostly apartments and private rooms, and also available are accommodation along cycling routes. In summer demand is high, so arrange accommodation in advance.
Over Vršič you drive in an hour to Kranjska Gora and to the Gorenjska side the Julian Alps, where Bled and Bohinj are. To the south the valley opens into Goriška Brda and on towards the sea.
For a full day you can also visit neighbouring Italy, as the border is only a few kilometres from Bovec. In winter Vršič is closed, so the route to Upper Carniola is then considerably longer.
