Notranjska is a karst landscape between the Ljubljana Marsh and Snežnik. Water has shaped caves, shafts and underground passages in the limestone, and on the surface dolines, karst fields, natural bridges and sinking rivers. The Karst therefore determines both the appearance of the landscape and its tourist offer.
Postojna are marked by the region's two central attractions. Postojna Cave is one of the largest and most visited cave systems, Predjama Castle is built into the wall above the cave entrance. Cerknica lies by Lake Cerknica, the largest intermittent lake in Europe. Its surface changes with the inflow and outflow of karst water.
Rakov Škocjan has natural bridges under which the waters from the karst fields withdraw underground. Ilirska Bistrica lies below Snežnik, while the wider area is criss-crossed by walking and cycling routes through forests and karst fields. Visits to the caves, the intermittent lake and other natural attractions are complemented by a museum and catering offer.
