Ilirska Bistrica developed in the narrow valley of the river Bistrica along Slovenia's southern border, once known for milling, sawmilling and fairs. The landscape is exceptionally varied: on one side rises the Snežnik plateau with the mighty Snežnik, the highest non-Alpine mountain in the country, and on the other spread karst meadows, the hills of the Brkini with their famous orchards and the mysterious Matarsko podolje with its blind valleys.
