The Iška Gorge

Among the small rivers that water the plain of the Ljubljana Marsh, the Iška is especially interesting. In the shelter between Krim and Mokrec it has cut a 300-400 metre deep gorge, where it leaps over rocky obstacles, halts in pools and lays gravel dunes on the ground.

On the threshold of the capital, in the deep picturesque gorge we can experience the wildness of unspoilt mountain landscape with waterfalls and the loud roar of rushing water. At Vrbica, where the Iška and the Zala join, stands a 10-metre-high rocky solitary – the Rock Man.

Its surroundings are adorned by Alpine flowers, on the sunny slopes stands of ash and hornbeam flourish in the sun, and on the damp dolomite rocks the endemic Carniolan primrose grows. A walk through the gorge, besides its natural beauty, also reveals the varied geological history of this area.
