Semič with its surroundings, the people of White Carniola call it Šokarija, covers 147 km², extending along the northern sunlit edge of White Carniola at the foot of Kočevski Rog and the slopes of Gorjanci. It is one of the three White Carniola municipalities, alongside Črnomelj and Metlika.
It got its name after the medieval noble order of the Semeniči. Nearby rises the hill of Smuk, one of the starting points of tourism alongside Mirna gora, Planina and the Bela ski centre.
From Semič there is the finest view of Semiška gora, sown with vines. In spring, when the sun drives the snow from the sunny slopes, the peaks (Smuk, Mirna gora, Semenič…) put on a green cap.
Semič is known for good wine, a rich cultural tradition (the Semič Wedding every year in the month of July) and for its cuisine, honey-making and well-preserved natural heritage — these are the reasons for visiting Semič, surrounded by vineyards and white birches.
