The Central Slovenia region covers Ljubljana and its wider hinterland, stretching from the Ljubljana Marshes in the south to the foot of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps in the north. Through its centre flows the Ljubljanica, linking the karst springs near Vrhnika, the marshland plain and the city embankments of the capital.
Ljubljana has a castle above the old centre, Plečnik's The Triple Bridge and the market, and the lively embankments of the Ljubljanica. Kamnik preserves a medieval centre below Mali grad with a Romanesque chapel, and above the town lies Velika planina, the largest high-mountain pasture in Slovenia with shepherds' huts. Domžale are connected with the straw-hat-making heritage, Vrhnika is the birthplace of Ivan Cankar and the place where the Ljubljanica reappears on the surface.
The Ljubljana Marshes are a protected landscape of wet meadows, rivers and cycle routes. The remains of pile-dwelling settlements near Ig are part of the UNESCO World Heritage. North of the city, the flat routes turn into climbs towards the Kamnik hills and Velika planina.
