Žiri lies in the Žiri basin, at the meeting of Gorenjska, Notranjska and Primorska. In the municipality there are several karst springs, caves and a lake. The mercury spring at Podklanec is the only spring with native mercury so far known in Slovenia. Across the municipality runs the famous Rupnik Line – a system of fortifications built by the Yugoslav army on the border between the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the Kingdom of Italy. Through the year numerous sporting and other events take place in the place.
The Sklednik Žiri restaurant offers daily snacks, lunches, catering; they organise picnics, wedding celebrations at the inn or catering at weddings.
