Kostanjevica na Krki is one of the oldest and at the same time smallest Slovenian towns, picturesquely set on an island in the middle of a meander of the river Krka, which is why it is often called the Dolenjska Venice. The name of the place is first mentioned in 1091, and it received town rights in the 13th century; its preserved medieval layout is today protected by the status of a cultural monument.
The old core is graced by the churches of St James and St Nicholas, and right beside the town stands the imposing former the Cistercian monastery, today home to the Božidar Jakac Gallery and the surrounding park with the Forma viva sculpture collection.
