ROOMS WITH A STORY PR’GAVEDARJO HAVE RECEIVED THE PRESTIGIOUS TRAVELIFE AWARD FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM
In tourism trends are increasingly turning towards long-term sustainable development, and some tourist accommodations are following this too, thereby complementing their usual offer for guests. One such is also the renovated homestead in the village of Podkoren, in the unspoilt surroundings of Kranjska Gora, where the owner, in her care for preserving family and Slovenian tradition, has created unique rooms.
The homestead has been in the family's ownership for more than 100 years; it has preserved its original name Pr’Gavedarjo, with the added explanation “Rooms with a story”. From the very beginning the vision and the guiding thread of the accommodation was something special, directed above all at preserving local cultural heritage and sustainable development. In renovating the homestead they used natural materials: lime plasters and solid wood, and in the rooms they preserved the original wall paintings, which they discovered when removing the plaster and then restored; they also preserved the old family furniture, the dowry the grandmothers brought into the house on their marriage, and interwove it with modern elements, while the finishing touch to the setting is given by the unique design of the renowned designer Almira Sadar, where the stories of family, local and Slovenian cultural heritage are interwoven in an innovative way.
The guiding thread of sustainable development shows itself to the guest already at the delicious healthy breakfast, since delicacies from the home garden, dairy products from a local farm, Slovenian cereals with an organic certificate and other organic products of Slovenian producers await them. In the construction and the interior furnishing only natural materials are used, for a better microclimate and the wellbeing of guests; for heating they use only waste energy from the neighbouring industry and biomass; the shampoos and soaps are ecological; as a cleaning agent they use, besides ecological cleaners, apple vinegar, and in the rooms and at breakfast guests receive only paper recycled from tetra packs. Besides the ecological aspect of sustainable development, Rooms with a story Pr’Gavedarjo are also aware of the social and economic aspect and support an active dialogue with the local community regarding their needs and wishes in the direction of tourism, they offer employment to the local population and help with events organised by the local community.
In May, as one of the first tourist accommodations in Slovenia, they received for their effort and achievements a prestigious award: the Travelife certificate for sustainable development in tourism, which confirms the right direction of their development and quality work in the field of sustainable development in Kranjska Gora and Slovenia.
