The most famous inhabitant of the emerald river is the Soča trout. Indigenous to the northern Mediterranean, Salmo trutta marmoratus is the largest European trout.
Its long, cylindrical body has a unique olive brown marble appearance and a relatively large head. Unfortunately, this unique animal has become an endangered species.
