The central part of the municipality Šmartno ob Paki lies in the lower Paka valley, which widens into the Paka plain after exiting the Penk gorge. The old town center developed around the church of St. Martin. The slopes of Mali vrh nad Šmartnim are covered with vineyards, and wines from all over the Šmarsko – Virštanjska wine region can be tasted at the wine cellar.
