The Dragonja river with its tributaries has shaped a rolling landscape in the western part of Dravinjske gorice, where Loče is located. Slopes covered with vineyards, fruit orchards and forests create a beautiful backdrop for hiking paths. Centuries of history have left their marks on the Carthusian monastery at Žiče. In fact, around 1160 the Carthusians (based in France) built their first monastery in a non-Roman land right here at Žiče. Not far from Loče, the ruins of a 12th-century castle stand on the slope of Zbelovska gora, and the 16th-century Zbelovo manor can be seen atop a hill above the town. Botanically, the area is famous for the žički grobeljnik , which grows in Slovenia only near the Carthusian monastery.
