Gorenjska
Gorenjska (formerly Upper Carniola) is a region with high peaks, sharp mountain ridges, deep Alpine valleys and crystal clear water. Narrow gorges with thundering waterfalls add to this typical vision of an Alpine environment, where quiet valley lakes reflect clear blue skies, dark green forests, extensive plains, cleared woodland, mountain pastures and the flora & fauna of colourful meadows.
The territory of the mythical Goldenhorn, leading his flock of chamois (half goat - half antelope) and surrounded by white edelweiss flowers, is a protected zone in the Triglav national park, which also contains Mount Triglav (three heads), at 2864m, is the national symbol of Slovenia. The best way to start exploring this magnificent park is to visit one of the tourist offices in Trenta, Kranjski gora, Bovec or Ribičev Laz in Bohinj. By following the info signposts in the park, you can take a journey back to the time of the first mountaineers, the weather hardened shepherds or sink though the layers of earth to the deep Karst underworld. There are several forest-educational paths and other related trails which lead you to the river channels of Tolminka, Zadlaščica, Mostnica, the Gorge of Pokljuka or to Zelenci, where the central Slovenian river Sava has it's source.
On the slopes of the Karavanke Mountains, the Golica is covered with daffodils and the peak of the Ajdna invites you, especially in Spring, to see the Velika Planina plateau, where cows graze like they have done for centuries before. In the Dovžan Gorge near Tržič you can visit the well-known archaeological stone site from the Permic Period and also the Smith's Museum in Kropa which exhibits interesting relics from this past trade.
Of course, you cannot leave Gorenjska without visiting Kranj the most famous tourist resort here, with a picturesque old town nestled on the pier above the meeting of the Sava and Kokra rivers. Make time to visit Škofja Loka with its famous castle, Kranjska Gora, Radovljica and Kamnik and of course the Arboretum Volčji Potok.
And last, but not least there is stunning lake Bled – with an island and church in the middle of the this picture-perfect lake. The island is overlooked by a fairy tale castle on the top of a steep cliff, which in turn is dwarfed by the majestic peeks of the Julian Alps. Bled is a centre for international rowing, congresses and other more local social events, as well as being the starting point for trips to the Slovenian Alps and ski resorts – »the image of paradise«, as humbly described by the greatest Slovenian poet France Prešeren.
