The Church of St. Hermagoras and Fortunatus - presentation

In an alpine basin at the base of the Savinja Alps, Peregrin, the patriarch of Aquileia, founded the only Benedictine monastery in what is now Slovenia. Founded in 1140, the monastery was operational for 333 years.

During this time, the church of of St. Hermagoras and Fortunatus was rebuilt several times. It obtained its present image during the 18th century, when it was converted into a cathedral with the largest church area and dome in Slovenia. Aside from its size and dome, the church is also known for a facade with the plastic arts of J. Straub.

The interior contains seven altars, 13 gravestones from the 16th and 17th centuries and a collection of stone fragments from the 12th and 13th centuries.
