The Šmarje pri Jelšah municipality lies in the valley of Šmarski potok between the Voglanjsko and Zgornjesotelsko hills.The Šmarsko – virštanjska wine tourism road runs over the sunny ridges of the Šmarje wine hills, allowing visitors to explore the area's traditions of food and wine. Culture lovers can take a trip through time with monuments such as Jelšingrad, Lemberg, the Calvary of St. Rocco and numerous ethnological sights.
