Slovenj Gradec is definitely the center of the entire Koroška region. Rapid economic development walks hand in hand with ancient spiritual tradition, historical monuments and natural beauty. Many international events and exhibitions (some sponsored by the United Nations) have given Slovenj Gradec a reputation as a city of peace and good international relations. In 1989, the General Secretary of the UN awarded the city the title Peace Messenger City.
