Ribnica lies in the middle of the Ribnica plain, by the Bistrica sinking stream. Few places have given the world as many spiritual and worldly intelligentsia as the Ribnica valley: composer Jakob Petelin Gallus, patron of Slovenian scholars Luka Knafelj, linguist friar Stanislav Škrabec, Janez Evangelist Krek and others. The distinguishing marks of the city are the mighty parish church with two bell towers, designed by famous Slovenian architect Jože, and »Ribnčan Urban« with his typical singsong speech and traditional wicker basket. The most famous ethnological event is definitely the Ribnica dry goods and pottery fair.
