The Sečovlje salt pans - presentation
With a huge assortment of animal and plant life, the Sečovlje saltpants are considered one of the most important natural heritage areas in Slovenia. The Submediterranean climate, increased saltiness of the water and cessation of salt production in most of the salt pans have created a special ecological habitat. The area of the salt pans is interesting because of the rich halophyte vegetation, the many bird species that nest here and the Etruscan pygmy shrew, the smallest mammal in the world.
The Sečovlje salt pans are a protected regional park included in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance.
