Štanjel
Štanjel
Štanjel is an outstanding urbanistic monument: a terraced medieval settlement atop the Turn hill. It is composed of three distinct parts: the castle, the church complex, and the village. The first two parts are connected by a paved town square that can be reached by a monumental stairway. Lines of expertly built stone houses stand on terraces around the hill. The narrow picturesque streets end at small squares with wells, and the entire tranquil image is topped off by the renaissance/baroque castle and the late gothic church of St. Daniel. The architect Maks Fabiani, who is buried here, built a large park outside the town walls. Štanjel is a mighty example of Karst tradition and culture.
