Dolžan gorge - presentation
Located near Tržič, the Dolžan gorge is a unique Permian fossil site of global significance. Over the course of many millennia, tectonic forces and the Tržiška Bistrica created a valley with a fascinating rock structure.
Many animal and plant fossils can be found here, the oldest and largest among them approximately 270 million years old. Scattered around the Bistrica river bed you'll find boulders made of quartz sediment.
Other interesting features of the gorge are the road tunnel and five pyramidal limestone towers. The Dolžan gorge is one of the central points of the Slovenian Geological Transversal.
