Descrizione della strada

If you arrived to the sunny side of the Alps (Slovenia, for the less poetic among you) via the Libeliče border crossing, head across Črneško polje past the Dravograd lake to the banks of the river Meža, which connects to the river Drava in Dravograd. Dravograd is also the starting point for cyclists coming from the Vič border crossing. The route then continues toward Trbonje and Vuzenica. It is fairly level, well-marked and not very challenging. The picturesque landscape changes its appearance quickly, and you may find that time is passing more quickly than you would like. If you entered Slovenia through the Vič border crossing, head for Dravograd immediately. Do not breeze through the old city center; take some time to at least visit the famous pilgrimage church of St. Vid. Then, cross the only bridge (past the railroad station) to the right bank of the Drava river where you will find Trbonje and Vuzenica. If you arrived to the sunny side of the Alps (Slovenia, for the less poetic among you) via the Libeliče border crossing, head across Črneško polje past the Dravograd lake to the banks of the river Meža, which connects to the river Drava in Dravograd. You will first come to a steep and rocky hillside called Bukovje, where the northwestern edges of Pohorje meet the Drava river. The entire area is protected as a nature reserve because of its natural beauty. In front of you is a nine-kilometer ride through a pleasant, tranquil forest. In Trbonje, you can visit the church and take the forest road toward Dravče. Alternatively, you can turn left, cross the Drava and cycle through Sp. Gortina toward Muta. The second option will take you along busier roads. A pleasant, relaxing descend from Dravče should bring you to what was once the biggest lumbering center by the Drava river, Vuzenice. We recommend a short rest here, as you will need to overcome a very steep, though luckily short, slope (18%) on your way to Vuhred. The road up is marked by the church of the Holy Virgin Mary on Kamen, from where there is also an incredible view of the Drava valley. In Vuhred, cross the Drava a second time and continue in the direction of Radlje ob Dravi. From Vuhred, follow the road over rolling terrain to Podvelka, halfway between Dravograd and Maribor. Now it is time for the first longer ascend, along the Velka river toward Lovrenc na Pohorju. The six-kilometer ascent will bring you to the highest point of this route - Razpotje, 543 meters above sea level. You can now either head all the way to Lovrenc na Pohorju or stay on the marked path and descend along the Slepnica stream toward Rdeči Breg. From Lovrenc na Pohorju, descend down the main road toward Puščava, where you will find an interesting graveyard next to the church of St. Mary. Discover its secrets! On the road toward Činžat you will encounter the last major ascent of the route. When you reach the top, you will be rewarded with an impressive vista! Next, descend for about five kilometers past the Fala castle to Ruše. Once you reach Ruše, your next destination is Bezena. Be careful of the markings, as the route to Maribor goes along mostly deserted gravel roads past Limbuško nabrežje and through the Studenec forest to the bank of the Drava. There, you will find a cycling path leading to the old part of town. Cross the Drava and make your way through the streets of Maribor to the city center. If you wish to go continue toward Ptuj, you must cross the Drava again. Follow it toward Pobrežje, where you can choose to cycle either along the left or the right bank of the river. If you chose the left bank, cross the channel and the old river bed of the Drava. Proceed through Malečnik and Trčovo to Zgornji Duplek and then Spodnji Duplek, where you should turn right toward Johe just beyond the gas station. Your journey to Ptuj will mostly take you close to the Drava river. During the trip, you can visit the church of St. Martin in Dvorjane or climb to the ruins of Vurberg castle, 435 m above sea level. From here, you have an incredible view of the Drava plain, all the way to Boč. As the route is level, progress can be made quickly and you will soon be able to see Ptuj, the oldest Slovenian city, on the horizon. Those who prefer lone, abandoned roads can get to Ptuj along the right bank of the Drava. From the Miklavž pond, head through Loka, Rošnja, Starši and Zlatoličje past Ptujske toplice to Ptuj. As you ride, enjoy the undisturbed nature of the Drava regional park. During the morning or afternoon, you may be surprised by pheasants, rabbits or deer. You can also admire the grey herons standing in the stream, patiently waiting for prey. If you would like to see the people of the villages on the Drava plain, as well as cycle faster, you may prefer the route from Miklavž through Dobrovci, Marjeta and Trniči to Skorbe, where you should cross the Maribor-Zagreb main road. Continue through the village past the golf course to Ptujske toplice. Cross the pedestrian/cycling bridge to the old city center of Ptuj. The marked cycling road ends here, but your exploration of Ptujs rich and fascinating history has just begun.

This route was named after the Drava river, which will accompany you during most of your journey from the Libeliče and Vič border crossings to Maribor or Ptuj. Radlje ob Dravi: The origin of the town is closely linked to the old Dominican nunnery from the year 1251. We also recommend visiting Kalvarija, characterized by the beautiful botanical garden. The town lively history is also evidenced by numerous buildings with Biedermeyer facades, frescoes and portals. The two most interesting buildings are Rožni dvor from the 16th century and Spodnji grad from the 17th century.
