Gewerkenegg Castle – Idrija Municipal Museum

Idrija Castle, which dominates the old part of the town, has preserved the historical name Gewerkenegg, which in the German language means mine castle. It was built in the years 1522–1533 for the needs of the Mercury Mine. At first grain and mercury were stored in it, and later for more than 400 years it provided premises for the mine administration. Over the centuries various offices, schools and residents were also housed in it. The Renaissance castle complex with three round corner towers and a front tower underwent a Baroque remodelling in the middle of the 18th century – the inner arcaded courtyard was laid out and painted with decorative frescoes. It received its present appearance in the first half of the 1990s. Today it is intended for museum activity, a music school and, to a lesser extent, catering and retail premises.

The Town Museum has its administrative premises in Gewerkenegg Castle, while the central permanent exhibition Five Centuries of the Mercury Mine and the Town of Idrija is open to the public, in which the half-millennium development of the mine underground and, in parallel with it, the growth of the town on the surface is presented. The exhibition presents technological processes, historical events, life stories and destinies. In this it is helped by original objects, replicas and copies, mine charts, maps, schemes, drawings, models and numerous photographs. The museum exhibition occupies most of the first and  the second castle floor; it is arranged in 26 exhibition rooms with a total area of over 1,300 m2.
The exhibition is divided into sections:

Milestones of five centuries,
The geological collection,
The documents tell a story,
Views of the town,
The mercury tower,
Notable figures,
The extraction of mercury and cinnabar,
Forestry and timber transport,
Witnesses to the pulse of life,
The historical paintings of Janko Trošt.

For its comprehensive permanent exhibition, the Idrija Municipal Museum received in 1997 the Luigi Micheletti Foundation award for the best European museum of industrial and technical heritage, awarded each year by the European Museum Forum.

In 2003 the permanent exhibition was completed with the section Milestones of the 20th Century, with which the period of the Italian occupation, of Italianisation and of Fascist pressure on the population, the time of the German occupation, the bombing of Idrija in the spring of 1945, the activity of the Pavla Partisan Hospital, of the Slovenija Printing Works and of the partisan units in the Idrija area are presented. The renewal of the town and the development of the new authorities after the Second World War are presented, as are the peak and at the same time the end of the operation of what was once the second largest mercury mine in the world and the restructuring of the countryside.
The exhibition consists of the following sections:
The Idrija territory
The period of Italian and German occupation
Resistance against the occupier
Living in Idrija
Connections with the wider world
Rural frescoes

On the second floor of the castle there is also on display
The Bevk memorial room.

Idrija is the oldest bobbin-lace centre in Slovenia, preserving the tradition of this domestic craft for more than three hundred years. The first written mention of lace from Idrija dates back to 1696. Idrija lace is a type of hand-made bobbin lace that has taken shape in our area over the centuries. In 2008 we set up in the museum a new exhibition about Idrija lace entitled »Idrija lace, history written with thread«.
The exhibition in three rooms is divided into eight thematic sections, through which you get to know the key features and activities that define Idrija lace:
– room 1: Bobbin lace in Europe, The development of Idrija lace;
– room 2: The lace trade, The lacemakers;
– room 3: The lace school, Lace and society, The Idrija Lace Festival and The lace treasury.

A selection of some of the curiosities presented in the exhibition:
– copies of previously unpublished documents and images of lace found in the archives;
– Jovanka's tablecloth, a protocol setting for 12 people and one of the largest surviving bobbin-lace pieces from the 1970s, intended for the wife of the then president Tito;
– evening creations with lace by renowned Slovenian fashion designers;
– the shortest bobbin-lace course: a 5-minute video demonstration of the basics of lacemaking;
– a screening of surviving footage from the lace festivals in Idrija from the 1950s to the present day

For the exhibition the museum was awarded the Valvasor Award in 2008 – the highest Slovenian professional award in the museum field.
