Description of path

Starting in Šentilj, descend through the Dobrenje valley to Pesnica valley, from where you can see Maribor and Kozjak nad Pesnico in the distance. Head for Maribor via the old Vienna road, once the most important road from Vienna to the Balkans and onward to the East. From Maribor, a cycling route leads over Slovenske gorice, past Lenart to the river Mura. The amber cycling connection, however, continues part Hoče across the Drava plain, through the Rački ribniki regional park and past the Požeg accumulation. This is one of the nicer parts of the route, as the waters are a veritable paradise for different kinds of birds and plants. The ride through forest should prove to be pleasant and quiet, far away from the roar of automobiles. At the end of Sp. Polskava, turn toward Pohorje and proceed through Leskovec and Spodnja Nova vas to Slovenska Bistrica, where the Amber cycling route ends at the castle.

This is one of the European routes meant to connect the Baltic sea and the Adriatic sea. Its Slovenian part begins at the Šentilj border crossing, on the Austrian border. Šentilj should give you your first sight of Slovenske gorice, spread softly between the Mura and the Drava. You will be repaid for the ascent with a beautiful view. Maribor is the center of the cycling region between Pohorje and Mura. Here, three main cycling connections cross, among the Drava cycling connection that continues along both banks of the Drava to one of the oldest Slovenian cities, Ptuj.
