Idrija lies inside a basin in the middle of the Idrija hills. As the oldest Slovenian mining town, its development was closely linked to the mercury mine, and the city's 500-year mining traditions are still alive today.
The Idrija City Museum, the picturesque Renaissance Geweerkenegg castle and the tourist mine all display the rich history of the city.
