Kostel got its name from the famous Kostel castle atop the steep cliff above the Kolpa river. The castle complex is comparable in size to the Celje castle. This hilly area with little flat land lies by the national border, on the left bank of the Kolpa river. The clean environment is enhanced by many natural landmarks worthy of a visit, including the Nežica waterfall, the Kolpa river, Kuželjsko okno, the Krajc – Bukovje forest reserve and several karstic caves. Because of its remoteness, the area is a primeval paradise of peace and quiet.
